Shintarou Jagasaki is your average neighbourhood cop who despises both his job and his daily life. Shintarou, who acts silly in front of others and is about to marry his girlfriend, secretly fantasises about shooting those who irritate him with a gun, much like his hero, the town’s eggplant mascot.

7. Attack on Titan

 Attack on Titan

Hundreds of years ago, terrifying creatures that resembled humans appeared. The “Titans,” or mindless, towering giants, proved to be an existential threat, preying on whatever humans they could find to satisfy an apparently insatiable appetite. Because humanity was unable to combat the Titans effectively, they were forced to barricade themselves within large walls surrounding what may have been humanity’s last safe haven on the planet.

Living within the walls has finally found peace after many years of not dealing with Titans. Eren Yeager, Mikasa Ackerman, and Armin Arlert are three young children who have grown up hearing stories about the wonders of the world outside the walls and want to experience everything the world has to offer. When their tranquillity is shattered by an attack by a massive 60-meter Titan, they quickly realise how cruel the world can be. On that day, Eren vows to himself that he will do whatever it takes to eliminate every single Titan from the face of the Earth, in the hope that humanity will be able to live outside again one day.

6. Tokyo Ghoul

Tokyo Ghoul

Fearsome beings known as “ghouls” lurk in Tokyo’s shadows, feeding on humans at night to satisfy their hunger. The Commission of Counter Ghoul (CCG) was formed in response to the constant attacks on citizens and as a means of purging these creatures. Ghouls, on the other hand, are difficult to identify because they disguise themselves as humans and live among the masses to make hunting prey easier. Ken Kaneki, an unsuspecting university freshman, finds himself in a world between humans and ghouls when his date turns out to be a ghoul after his flesh.

He discovers that the surgery he received has transformed him into a half-ghoul after barely surviving this encounter and being taken to a hospital. After being unable to satisfy his intense craving for human meat through conventional means, Kaneki is taken in by friendly ghouls who run a coffee shop to assist him with his transition. He has no idea that he is about to become embroiled in a war between his new comrades and the forces of the CCG, or that his new existence has piqued the interest of ghouls all over Tokyo as he begins what he believes will be a peaceful new life.

5. Dorohedoro

 Dorohedoro

Hole is an apt term for a dark, decaying, and disorderly neighbourhood where the strong prey on the weak and death is common. It is a realm distinct from law and ethics, and it serves as a testing ground for the magical users who rule it. The magic users, as a race at the pinnacle of their society, regard the residents of Hole as nothing more than insects. On a daily basis, the powerless Hole residents are murdered, mutilated, and subjected to experiments in the halls of Hole’s hospital.

With free access to and from the cesspool and little opposition to their authority, the magic users appear to most—with the exception of a few—invincible. One such example is the caiman, a reptile-like creature. He pursues them zealously, armed only with a trusted pair of bayonets and his magical immunity. Magic users are his only hope of returning to normalcy after being cursed by his appearance and plagued by nightmares. His female companion Nikaidou, who owns the restaurant Hungry Bug, is his greatest ally, as his stomach is his main obstacle.

Dorohedoro, set in a gritty world of hellish design, strikes a healthy balance of comedy and lightheartedness with death and carnage. It weaves a unique world of unearthly origin and bleak appearance, with many twists and turns as it follows the lives of Hole’s residents. It is not for the faint of heart or those who are easily startled.

4. Fire Punch

Fire Punch

The elusive Ice Witch has brought civilization to its knees in a world ravaged by ice and snow. Cold weather has brought out the worst in people, resulting in cults, violence, and persecution of the “Blessed”—those born with supernatural abilities.

Agni and Luna, two orphans blessed with regenerative abilities, are making the best of their situation within a small society of elders; their love for each other serves as a distraction from the uninhabitable climate. Nonetheless, their fragile peace is shattered when army commander Doma passes through and burns down the village where they are seeking refuge, killing Agni’s beloved sister. Doma’s flames will not die until their target is reduced to ash, and thanks to Agni’s incredible regeneration, he will remain ablaze and in excruciating pain.

After nearly a decade of suffering, Agni has conditioned himself to tolerate Doma’s flames. His rage, on the other hand, is as strong as it was the day Luna was taken from him. As he traverses a frozen wasteland, Agni vows to avenge his sister and kill Doma.

3. Dandadan

 Dandadan

Momo Ayase is wallowing in self-pity after being aggressively rejected when she comes across a boy who is being bullied. After being saved by her rash kindness, the occult-obsessed boy attempts to speak with her about supernatural interests he believes they share. In response to his claims, Ayase declared that she believes in ghosts, sparking a debate between the two about which is correct.

In order to determine who is correct, the two decide to visit locations associated with the occult and the supernatural separately—Ayase going to the former and the boy going to the latter. When the two arrive at their destinations, they discover that they were not misled and that the occult and ghosts do exist.

This begins Ayase and the boy’s adventure, who shares the same name as Ayase’s favourite idol—Ken Takakura—as they try to repair the surreal supernatural and sci-fi elements around them in order to return to normal life.

2. Hell’s Paradise

Hell’s Paradise

Gabimaru the Hollow, a cold and emotionless ninja from Iwagakure Village, was set up and is now on death row. He wishes to die because he is fed up with killing and betrayal. No method of execution, however, works on him because, despite his apparent apathy, Gabimaru has a reason to live. He wishes to return to his wife, who was the reason he softened and lost his ability to assassinate effectively. As a result, he will not die.

A well-known executioner, Asaemon the Decapitator, notices this and has an idea for the ninja. She wants Gabimaru to join an expedition to an island south of Japan in search of the elixir of life in exchange for a full pardon from the Shogunate. This island, on the other hand, is unique in that it is thought to be Paradise.

The island, however, is full of mysteries, and the exploring team—consisting of those marked for death—may not be fully prepared to deal with them.

1. Jujutsu Kaisen

Jujutsu Kaisen

In plain sight, an age-old conflict rages. Supernatural monsters known as “Curse” terrorise humanity from the shadows, and powerful humans known as “Jujutsu” sorcerers use mystical arts to exterminate them. Yuuji Itadori, a high school student, is drawn into this bloody conflict after discovering a dried-up finger of the legendary Curse Sukuna Ryoumen.

When he is attacked by a Curse drawn to the power of the finger, Yuuji makes a risky decision to protect himself, gaining the ability to combat Curses but unwittingly reintroducing the malicious Sukuna into the world. Despite the fact that Yuuji is capable of controlling and confining Sukuna within his own body, the Jujutsu world regards Yuuji as a dangerous, high-level Curse that must be eradicated.

Yuuji has been imprisoned and sentenced to death when he meets Satoru Gojou, a teacher at Jujutsu High School, who informs him that, despite his impending execution, he has a choice. If Yuuji died as a rare vessel to Sukuna, Sukuna would perish as well. As a result, Yuuji’s subsequent execution would effectively eliminate the malicious demon if Yuuji consumes the many other remnants of Sukuna. Yuuji enrols in Jujutsu High, plunging headfirst into a harsh and unforgiving battlefield in order to make the world a little safer and extend his life.
