Horiki Adichi’s ‘Hori-san to Miyamura-kun’ or ‘Horimiya’ is a slice-of-life Japanese shnen web manga. The anime adaptation of the anime was the most talked-about anime of the year when it aired in 2021.
It follows Kyouko Hori and Izumi Miyamura through their high school years. Both are very different people who find comfort in each other’s company. Hori is a popular teenage girl who is good at school and looks after her younger brother as well as the house they live in because her parents work most of the time.
Miyamura, on the other hand, is a quiet, mediocre student who keeps to himself. He has nine piercings that he did himself, as well as tattoos all over his body. The series follows their friendship and how it develops into love. It depicts high school love and the uncertainty of entering adulthood.
Horimiya has a number of adorable moments throughout the series; some of the best Horimiya moments are listed below.
Cutest Horimiya Moments!
1. New Friendship (Episode 1)
The first episode contains several cute and funny moments. When Hori’s younger brother, Sota, injures himself, Miyamura brings him home, where he runs into Hori outside of school. Hori is unable to recognise him due to his exposed piercings and hairdo.
Hori asks Miyamura to visit her brother the next day at school because he has been asking about him. Hori, Miyamura reasoned, would not want to be associated with him because of his piercings and hair. Hori responds that she doesn’t care, causing Miyamura to blush.
Miyamura was eager to attend an egg sale the following day. Yuki, Hori’s friend, saw Miyamura on the way. Hori later stated that she does not want anyone else to see Miyamura’s cooler side, and he responded that he, too, does not want to see Hori’s ‘homely’ side. She becomes agitated and can’t stop herself from saying “baka.” Both regard their time together as precious. This marked the start of a new friendship between the two.
2. First Name Basis (Episode 2)
Hori and Miyamura spend a lot of time at Hori’s house in episode two. Hori realises, to her horror, that she doesn’t know Miyamura’s first name when her mother asks. And she was too shy to ask him directly.
As a result, a hilarious effort ensues in which Hori tries to find his first name through various means such as looking for the attendance sheet, peeking into the boys changing room, and so on.
She gathers her courage and asks Miyamura directly to return home, and the viewers learn that his first name is Izumi. Hori asked Miyamura if he knew her first name, thinking he didn’t, but he casually replies that it was Kyouko. Hori becomes even more embarrassed as a result of this.
3. The Student Council Confrontation (Episode 2)
Hori is a Student Council member who diligently completes the majority of the work assigned to her. She is programmed to do other people’s work, which she appears to enjoy. Remi, another student council member, rushes through the corridor, collides with Miyamura, and drops some papers.
In a hurry, she gathers everything she can and asks Miyamura to throw away whatever is left. Miyamura discovers that those were the budget reports that Hori had recently completed. The following day, the student council blames Hori for the report’s loss and demands an apology from her.
Miyamura has had enough and headbutts the President of the Student Council, telling them the whole truth. After learning this, they apologize to Hori and leave.
4. In Sickness and In Health (Episode 4)
In episode 4, Hori becomes ill with no one to care for her because Shota has gone to school. She recalls the time when her mother had to go to work despite Hori’s illness. She wishes to be with someone. Miyamura is caring for her when she opens her eyes.
Miyamura is stopped while trying to get her food by Hori, who hallucinates and sees Miyamura as her mother and asks, “Where are you going?” Miyamura assures her that he will not leave unless she tells him to, and that she should rest.
5. First Kiss (Episode 6)
Hori and Miyamura share their first kiss in episode 6. Shindo, Miyamura’s friend, had won a lot of candies and wanted to share them with the two, so he invited them to his house. Shindo’s girlfriend had eaten all of the normal flavoured candies, so the trio was experimenting with new flavours.
Miyamura kissed Hori while Shindo was looking away as he ate a clay-flavored candy. He also stole the candy she was holding. The scene is a very innocent depiction of affection and is frequently seen at the start of a relationship.
6. Longing (Episode 7)
Miyamura had to leave Tokyo for a few days with his family in episode 7. In addition, he forgets his phone charger and is unable to communicate with Hori for five days. Hori is missing Miyamura at this time, though she does not express it.
The scene captures both their longing and their concern for one another. When she sees Miyamura, she hugs him and tells him that she had no idea five days could be so long and how much she missed him.
7. Acting Cute (Episode 7)
In the same episode, Hori’s friends tell her that if she continues to watch horror movies, Miyamura will eventually leave her because he dislikes them. They also stated that Miyamura would not find Hori attractive.
Keeping this in mind, when the two are watching a horror film, Hori tries to act scared by holding Miyamura’s hand, but this scares Miyamura more than anything else, and both end up screaming.
This is a hilarious scene that makes the audience laugh out loud. Hori explains her intentions when questioned. Miyamura assures her that he will not abandon her because he fell in love with her and not with any other “normal girl.”
It’s a beautiful depiction of the fear that couples experience when one of them decides to leave for whatever reason.
8. Hori’s Wishes (Episode 8)
Hori is painting Miyamura’s toenails in episode 8. Miyamura keeps his foot on Hori’s head at random. He apologises and claims that he felt compelled to do so because he was afraid Hori would become enraged.
Hori, on the other hand, stated that she wanted him to yell and shout at her like he did with his other friends. She wished Miyamura would be more dominant and liberated with her. This is difficult for Miyamura because he is shy, but he tries for her sake.
This results in a series of amusing scenes in which Miyamura yells at Hori. He feels bad, but when he sees Hori’s delighted expression, he tells himself that he would do anything to make her happy.
9. Spending the Future Together (Episode 9)
Episode 12 begins with the arrival of the Christmas season. Miyamura is too busy helping his family’s cake shop to be with Hori’s family while delivering their cake.
Hori offers to walk with Miyamura after he delivers their cake, and Miyamura says, “let’s get married.” Hori, to his surprise, says yes, and they both wish to make each other happy. The viewers were overjoyed that they would be able to spend their future together in this scene.
10. The Ending! (Episode 13)
Episode 13 is about the batch’s graduation ceremony. Everyone has mixed feelings about leaving school and leaving their memories behind. All of the characters’ relationships with their families and friends have changed.
They take pictures of each other to keep as sweet memories. Miyamura reflects on how Hori has changed his life and how he is no longer a lonely person without friends.
The anime concludes with Miyamura mentally thanking Hori and vowing to always make her happy. He mulls over what to give Hori and decides on a cake with lots of cream, which happens to be her favourite thing.
The anime depicts the bonds formed by a teenager during his school years. The importance of family, friendship, and the unknown future that awaits them. It beautifully captures the reality and various situations that arise during the final year of high school.
The anime was very popular because many people could relate to it, having gone through similar experiences at some point in their lives. The sweet high school romance that grew out of friendship, combined with various comic elements, made this the best anime for all ages.
We are certain that the viewers saw themselves in one of the characters, reminiscing about their school days and remembering their classmates fondly.
